Abstract : The current study aims to identify the stigma attached to being a prisoner’s wife and the different aspects of the experience of stigmatization by prisoners' wives. The study has used the mixed method approach, as well as the expected stigma scale (by Stalnaker, 2017) and the interview (by the researcher) as tools of study. The first phase’s sample of study has consisted of (70) wives with the purpose of filtering the main interview sample, which amounted to (16) women. The findings of the study have showed high levels of stigma for the respondents and identified social stigma as the most common type for prisoners’ wives, which is related to social harassment, society’s negative perception, blame, rejection in addition to change of behavior and contempt by other people, which lead first to the expected stigma in terms of ensuring secrecy and fear the society, then to the self-stigma which is manifested in defeatism, stress, self-blame and shame. Such stigma could have serious consequences such as PTSD symptoms, optional-isolation, sense of insecurity, rigidity, loneliness, violence and health deterioration. Prisoners’ wives resort to coping mechanisms to address stigmatization such as belief in God, development of support network, seeking psychological help, avoidance behavior, emotional discharge, looking for a source of income and charities support. Prisoners’ wives face many life obstacles and difficulties such as economic conditions, schools’ problems, government procedures, society’s perception and questions in addition to responsibilities. Finally, the study has come to the conclusion that prisoners' wives are in need of moral and financial support. Keywords: Impacts of imprisonment - Stigma - Prisoners’ families - Prisoners’ wives.
