About the Department of family-community-medicine
The department was established under the name of preventive medicine, with the establishment of the University on the fourth of Shawwal 1395 AH. All the members were non-Saudis. On the academic year 1423 AH the department name changed to "family and community medicine " in line with the requirements and needs of the society to a specialization in family medicine.
The concept of preventive medicine changed to what is named the community medicine. The university sent eight students to study abroad. The department is the most diverse in the disciplines of community medicine in Saudi Arabia, following are some of the existing specializations:
Epidemiology
1. Health education.
2. Mother and child care.
3. Nutrition.
4. Health management.
5. Occupational health.
In 1994 and based on many known global trends the department brought a group of specialists in family and community, medicine knowing that in many of the departments in Europe, United states of America and other countries these two specialties are under one umbrella i.e. the family and community medicine, and sometimes this is abbreviated to FAMCO (Family & Community Medicine).
