UROLOGY DEPARTMENT

About Us

The Department of Urology began with the opening of the University Hospital as a division in the Department of Surgery, then it turned into an independent department in 1990, and it continued to develop until it became one of the best departments in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The department aims to develop and modernize methods of treating urinary system diseases for adults and children and keep pace with every event in the field of urology. The department includes an elite group of consultants and faculty members specialized in all subspecialties in urology:

  • Oncologic urology
  • Paediatric urology
  • Neurourology
  • Reconstructive surgeries of the urinary system
  • Andrology and infertility
  • Endourology

The department includes the following units: Endourology unit, Urodynamics unit, Transrectal and MRI fusion biopsies of the prostate unit.

Objectives

  • Leading the Saudi Urological Association
  • Active participation in teaching medical students in the basic and clinical years.
  • Training doctors under the supervision of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties to obtain the urology Saudi board certificate.
  • Direct supervision of the department’s graduate programs.
  • Scientific research in specialized fields and publication in prestigious scientific journals.
  • Membership in various scientific and administrative committees at the College of Medicine and at King Abdulaziz University.
  • Sponsoring extracurricular activities, including cultural, social, and sports, for students at the College of Medicine.
  • Direct care and incorporation with other college departments for university hospital patients.
  • Providing part-time consultations to government and private hospitals and medical colleges in the Makkah Al-Mukarramah region.

The urology course is taught within the general surgery course in the sixth year of the bachelor’s degree at the College of Medicine.

The Saudi Board of Urology

The Department of Urology is considered as one of the leading departments in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in training Saudi Board doctors to obtain a specialty certificate in urology.

The Urology residency program focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of the reproductive and urinary system and adrenal glands using surgical and non-surgical methods for different age groups.

Duration of the program is 5 years.

  • 1st year: General Surgery Department / Critical Care Unit / Emergency Department.
  • 2nd-5th year: In the Department of Urology at King Abdulaziz University.
Objectives:
  • Theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge of the following:
  • Chronic and acute urinary system diseases in both sexes with medical, surgical and non-surgical methods.
  • Tumours and injuries of the genitourinary system.
  • Treating congenital malformations and diseases of the urinary and reproductive systems in children.
  • Basic surgical skills for urology surgeries.
  • Treating male infertility and impotence.
Acceptance:
  • Obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from a university accredited by the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Passing the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties exam.

Accepted candidates per year: 2-3 candidates.
