Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is underutilized modality of Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) in many parts of the world including Saudi Arabia. It is used in less than 10 % of all patients who require RRT. We retrospectively studied all patients dialyzed in our hospital with this modality over the last 5 years. Data were collected on structured Performa from chart review and data base. Data was analyzed by the statistical software, SPSS version 12 and presented in the form of frequencies and percentages. A total of 56 patients with ESRD, mean age ±SD, 49 ±20 years (range 16-92 years), were dialyzed by this modality, both CAPD (38) and APD (18). Twenty six (46%) patients were females. The mean follow-up time of these patients was 68 ±56 weeks. The underlying etiologies for ESRD in these patients were DM (48%), glomerulonephritis (9%), and hypertension (7%). Twenty seven patients (48%) were started on PD from the outset, while 29 patients (52%) were switched from HD to PD. Nineteen (34%) patients developed a total 29 episodes of peritonitis, at a rate of PD peritonitis of one episode in 73 patient years. The incidence of peritonitis was 0.4 episode per patient-year. Exit-site infection occurred in 17 (30%) patients. No tunnel infection was observed during the study period. The non-infectious catheter-related complications (major and minor) rate was seen in 12.5% of patients. Six (11%) patients had hernia (umblical or inguinal). At the end of the follow-up, 23 (41%) patients continued on PD, 17 (30%) patients received a renal transplant, 7(13%) suffered technique failure who subsequently switched to HD and 9 (16%) patients died. Our data shows that PD related complication rate is quite low in our study with an acceptable technique failure rate and mortality. We conclude that PD is a safe and an essential treatment modality complementary to other modalities of the integrated care approach to patients with ESRD.
